THE BUTTERFAT LEVY
FURTHER REFUND SOUGHT. ACTION BY CHEESE PEOPLE. The Government having established a precedent in refunding the butteri'at levy for the> last and the present | seasons has emboldened the cheese ! producers to ask for similar action in | regard to the season 1916-17. A I meeting of cheese pompany delegates ! at Palmerston recently discussed the : matter, when it was pointed out that I there was really more'justification for a return of the difference to producers • for the 1916-17 season, as the Go- ! vcrnment at the time forced "the breakj ing of contracts for lOd and 10*d, ; compelling companies to accept the Government price of 9*d, while deducting a further 2<J to pay for the ! butter-fat levy. A deputation inter- , viewed Mr Massey on the question. ! and he said that it was too late to do .anything this session. In any case the i question was one for Parliament to decide. The conference decided to ! make the question an electioneering one and dairy companies throughout the country are being asked to try and extract a promise from candidates j for Parliament to vote for the refund i sought.
The matter was discussed at a meeting of the South Auckland Dairy Association at Hamilton yesterday, when it was decided to inform dairy companies of the desire of the cheese conference.
