AMERICANS RECOVER LOST GROUND IN FACE OF TERRIFIC MACHINEGUN FIRE. (Australian and New Zealand Cable Association.) Received October 22, 8.35 p.m. WASHINGTON, October 21. Fierce fighting north-west of Verdun forced the Americans to retreat in the Bois do Rappes neighbourhood. Later, facing a terrille machine-gun lire, the Americans counter-attacked and recovered a part of the lost wood. FRENCH ADVANCE IN FACE OF VIGOROUS RESISTANCE. ALL POSITIONS MAINTAINED DESPITE HEAVY COUNTER-ATTACKS. (Australian and New Zealand and Reuter.) Received October 22, 8.35 p.m. LONDON, October 21. A French communique states that to-day we resumed our advance between the Oise and the Serre. On the right we carried Nesbrecourt and Rieheeourt. We advanced on the left between Lucy and Villers le Sec, despite vigorous resistance. The Germans frequently heavily counter-attacked on the plateau east of Veuziers, but all our positions were maintained.
