Sir Douglas Ilaig reports that there was sharp fighting at night time and early morning for the possession of Amerval, which we captured on Sunday. We. repulsed determined attempts to regain the village. The enemy "us morning unsuccessfully attempted to drive our advanced posts in the neighbourhood of the Gambrai-Douai road. We took afew prisoners. We continued our progress eastward and northward of Denain, and despite considerable opposition, we progressed two miles towards Yalenciennei, and tvch"d the general line, from Hastinellc and St. Amand to Taintinies. We hold the west hank of the Scheldt for several miles northward of Pontachin and north-west of Towinai.
