THE IRISH PROBLEM

THE SINN FEIN MOVEMENT. SEDITIOUS AND PRO-GERMAN. UNIONISTS READY FOR CONFERENCE. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received May 20, 5.5 p.m. LONDON, May 19. Lord Middleton, on behalf of the Unionists of -South-west Ireland, in a letter to Mr Lloyd George, insisted that the Sinn Fein movement had gained immensely in {strength since the rebellion. Its operations are actively seditious and pro-German, and its declared aim is an Irish Republic. Any division of Ireland will enormously increase the forces of disloyalty. The southern Unionists are willing to consider the possibility of a convention, and have already announced their readiness to enter into a conference on the future government of the Empire after the war, hoping that the Irish question may be settled on broad Imperial lines.
