HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The fortnightly meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council was held last evening in the Borough Chambers, there being present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. W. Ellis), and Councillors Isow, Jolly, Tidd, Herbert, Snell, Gosling, Mason, Howden, Lafferty, Tristram, Tombs, and Frascr-Smith. General Rate.

The Mayor moved in accordance with his notice of motion, "That the resolution passed at an adjourned special meeting of the Council, held on Monday, 14th inst., giving notice of intention to make a general rate of one penny three-farthings (Ifel) in the £be rescinded, with a view to making *he general rate twopence (2d) in the £, the proceeds from the extra farthing to be earmarked against reduction of overdraft."—Carried unanimously. At The Saleyards Question. secretary of the Hamilton West School Committee forwarded a resolution of protest against the continued use of the saleyards as passed at the annual meeting of householders. The Mayor said that they knew the yards should not be there, I ut they did not know where to put them. It was resolved to reply to the effect thit consideration of the question of removal this year was completely out of their reach, but they would do their best to find a suitable site, and that a committee was being set up to deal with such matters. Educational Association. The Workers' Educational Association solicited a contribution to its funds. Councillors expressed much sympathy with the movement, but it was pointed out that in the present circumstances the Council could not grant any subsidy, but hoped to be able to be in a position to do so next year. Objectionable Posters.

A circulari letter was received from the Minister of Internal Affairs, asking the Council to exercise its powers under fi!Te> Municipal Corporations' Act in respect to objectionable posters. It was resolved to reply that the Council would take action if fouvl necessary. Registering Motors. The Dannevirke Borough Council asked the Council to support a resolution in favour of boroughs of over 3000 inhabitants being motor registering authorities. On the motion of Cr. Tidd, the resolution, as submitted, was carried. Seddon Park Footpath.

The secretary of the Hamilton Domain Board wrote advising that the chairman would interview the Mayor relevant to the fcotway alongside the railway line at Seddon Park. r jfcp Mayor was authorised to discuss as suggested. An Alleged Nuisance.

A complaint was received from Mrs R. McAyjtnjlley in regard to the nuisance caused by the machinery at the Frankton Bacon Factory. A committee consisting of Crs. Jolly, Snell, and Tristram, was appointed to report upon the question.. Town Clerk's Report. The Town Clerk reported that there

was practically no gravel available in Mamilton East for side streets; that | value re collecting manure was more In 20s per year; that subject to the approval of Council the secretary of the Winter Show had been permitted to use the small office on left of main entrance, and store some heavy machinery in building. A report dealing with the cemetery sexton was also submitted. The report was dealt with as follows: Gravel, left in hands of Works Committee with power to act; manure, left in hands of Saleyards Committee to obtain best price; office, action of the Town Clerk confirmed; cemetery, Town Clerk to obtain further particulars. Inspectors. The committee set up to go into the matter of inspection in the bcrough recommended that Mr G. A. Hayter be appointed temporary drain and building inspector.—Approved. The committee also recommended that Mr E. A. Tisch be appointed temporary sanitary plumbing inspector.—Approved. Committees. The following committees were appointl| un- 7 er the Council:— Legal and Finance.—To consist of the whole Council. Works and Sanitary.—Crs Tristram, Gosling, Snell, Howden, Fraser-Smith, and Jolly. Gas, Water, and Electrical.—Crs. v —v Mason, Tombs, Tidd, Herbert and "Jen. iown Hall and Baths.—Crs. Tidd, Herbert, Tombs and Lafferty. Saleyards and Horse Bazaar.—Crs. Howden, Snell, Gosling, and Jolly, and to confer with Winter Show Executive. By-Laws.—Crs. Tidd, Tombs, FraserSmith and Fow. Accounts. Accounts as submitted were passed for payment subject to scrr.ti jy of Legal and Finance Committee. Miscellaneous. Mr A. S. Burgess and others wrote re blackberries, and installation of lamp.— . It was resolved to notify applicant that I the Council was taking action in regard to noxious weeds, and that no new gas lamps would be erected during the current year. A complaint was rece'ved from Mr J. Frear relevant to gas suppbed for cooking purposes.—Referred to Gas Committee. The secretary of the Church of Christ trustees asked that the footway frontin? the church be attended to.—Referred to Works Committee. Mr F .S.
