The Hamilton Borough solicitors (Messrs Swarbrick and Swarbrick), forwarded an opinion to the council meeting last night regarding the responsibility of occupiers for the clearing of street footpaths. The council decided to authorise the solicitor to take action. One councillor interjected: "What about taking the Domain Board for a start " (Laughter).

Mr W. Patton, of King street, Frankton, recently met with a serious accident, being thrown from a lorry through it coming in contact with a heap of clearing, allegedly left by the Borough employees in Hinen.oa street. He applied for compensation to last night's meeting of the Borough Council, and the matter was referred to the Legal and Finance Committee . The shareholders of the Mutual Stores, Ltd., have decided upon voluntary liquidation, Mr R. English having been appointed liquidator. We understand the business will be carried on as before under the supervision of tlie liquidator until such time as arrangements cm be made for the sale of the late company's valuable freehold and buildings in Victoria street. ins Marble Bar will continue as heretofore.

When the question of granting a subsidy to the Workers' Educational Association cime up for discussion at the nncil meeting last night Cr Tidd remarked that if it only converted some of the I.W.W. doctrines into sane bebei it would be doing good work in the interests of the community. The Council was entirely in sympathy with the movement, but has not the necessary funds to give financial assistance just now.

On Thursday next, 24th May, the ladies of (jlordontou and Puketaha districts will run the Red Cross stall in Hamilton. An energetic committee has b.en working hard upon the project for some weeks past, with the result that a large array of bread, scones, pastry, etc., will be offered, while there will lso be stocks of fresh meat and poultry. It has been decided to specialise in cream, for which prospective buyers are requested to take jars. Competitions of the customary character will also be held.

The ladies of St. George's Guild, Frankton, hell a progressive euchre party and dance in the Town Hall last evening which proved an unqualified success. The Frankton Band, attired in its new uniforms, marched from Hamilton to tho Town Hall, where selection-, were played outside the building. The band also provided the dance music, which was very much appreciated. The bandsmen looked ve:y smart in their new dress, and many favourable comments were passed thereon. The prizes for the euchre were pre-entid by .Mrs Ellis, and were won by Miss Violet Steele and Mr Steele respectively. At the meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council last evening it was resolved, on the motion of the Mayor, that the general rate for the current year be 2d in the £. The amount accruing from the general rate struck at 2d in the £ is £9729, as compared with £7638 last year. Frankton, however, paid a sanitary rate amounting to £023 last year, which amount must be added to the £7368. The rates this year in Old Hamilton amount to 3 13-24 d in the t' as compared with 3d last year. Claudelands, in each case, paid one farthing less. Frankton's amount this year is 27-16 d, last year ljd. Frankton paid a sanitary fee of two-sevenths of a penny last year; there is none this vear.
