MATAMATA COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING.

Ihe monthly meeting of the Matamata County Council was held at Tirau on Tuesday. Present: Crs. J. W. Anderson (chairman), J. Pohlen (Matamata), F. Barnett (Putaruiu), R. Carruth (Patetere), A. Potts (Taotaora), J. Scott (Maungatautiri), F. Shannon (engineer), and H. Lewis (clerk). The Auckland Provincial Belgian Relief Fund acknowledged the Council's monthly contribution of £l2 10s. A printed resolution was received from the Waikarie Council in regard to tch raising of wheat, potatoes, and vegetables on the large as well as small areas.

A letter was received from Messrs Hampson, Bell, and Daws, in regard to the road through Mr Bowler's property to the effect that Mr Bowler was prepared to pay the required amount on the road being transferred and registered. —Mr Bowler is to be asked to lodge the money with the Council, and they would undertake the formation of the road when required. ihe contractor wrote in regard to tho formation of the Waitoa Creek road that he would like an extension of six months for the job, as more deviations were required than at first thought.— Granted.

The New Zealand Council's Association wrote enclosing a memorandum asking for particulars of any matter the Council wished brought before Parliament or Ministers at the Association meeting in July.—Received. The Gammons' Tauranga, Ltd., sawmillers and timber merchants, wrote in regard to the proposed road from Mamaku to the Maugorewa Gorge, and asking if they are prepared to take the work up. As they pay the Council £ll3 in rates they thought the Council should assist them.—The Council decided it could do nothing at present.

The Minister of Public Works notified that the department was taking land for the formation of a road through the Dandrup native lands at Hinuera, and closing the roads through Blocks 9 and 13, S.D., Matamata County.—Received.

Six tenders were received for the Te Poi roads. Gravelling that of Messrs Simpson and Jones' at 4s od per yard was accepted. A schedule of small accounts (totalling £53 16s sd) of unexpended thirds was forwarded by the Public Works Department. They were chiefly for the Patetere riding. The matter was left in the hands of the Engineers to prepare plans, etc. A letter was received from the Matamata School Committee, thanking the Council for their contribution of £3O towards the cost of the technical sclfool at Matamata.

The accounts passed for payment comprised £154 15s 2d on the loan and interest fund, and £635 2s 5d general fund.

The Engineer (Mr T. Shannon), in his monthly report, stated that the plans, etc., had now been completed in regard to the proposed deviation on the Ngatiri-Okohii iki road. It was agreed that a better and cheaper line of road could be obtained on the opposite side of Mr Goodwin's house. Borings were taken to further test the foundations for the Omaliine stream bridge, and were satisfactory. The bridges on Earle and Kent's road were completed. Temporary* repairs have been made to the bridge near the Hinuerr nation. The rimu stringers were in ?. decayed condition, the tSamford br ge on the Hinuera Valley road being iu a similar condition. Cooper's deviation has been completed, and Middleton has made a start on Nathan's road. Considerable repairs were necessary to the Cambridge road, and the work is now in hand. Quintan's road Jias been repaired in the "worst He had examined a proposed road required by Boler Bros., of Matamata, and recomemnded same. The drains on the Turanga-o-Moana road were being deepened. Soft sand patches and ruts on the Hora Hora-Puketurua road required attention. The Waipa bridge on same road required repairs. Works on the Cranston and Putaruru to Puketurua roads, Puketurua to Waikato bridge and Sneddon's road had been completed, and repairs on the Tirau roads were now being proceeded with.
