NEWCASTLE ROAD BOARD

The monthly •meeting of the ahovo Hoard was held at Te Kowhai on Monday. Present: Messrs W. I). Laxon ■•'•.-a'-nucin, i. Jones. >■'.. S. Masters. A. . ■). Gallagher and S. Saulhrey. Mr H. Mills, Rotokauri, wrote reminding the Board of their unfulfilled promise to make improvements on Soper's swamp road. The Waipa County Council wrote that the question of purchasing the stone crusher offered by the Waipa Colliery Co. will be considered in the near future.—Tt was decided that,some members of the Hoard with the Council's engineer, Mr Mandeno, and Cr Fullerton, make an inspection of the Board's quarry on Kay's property. The Hoard's employees, including the foreman, gave notice that they intend to leave the Hoard's employ, giving the reason that they had secured a drainage contract which would he mere remunerative than working for the Hoard. The foreman also complained of the interference of certain members of the Hoard in tlie matter of read works.— It was decided to defer the question of re-olacing the men until the next meeting. Mr R. T). Duxfield, with Mr Farrer, anjain waited on the Hoard re ded-'cation of roads on his subdivision at Horotiu. —The clerk read a letter from the » Poard's solicitors (Messrs MacDiarmid and Mears) in which they gave the opinion that the Hoard cannot demand drainage outlets, as this was a matter for agreement between them and Mr Duxfield. As.regards damage to the allotments through waiter beiw backed up. the Board would not be liable for such damage, presuming that they took the reads over in their present condition.
