Mr Gunson has been returned unopposed as Mayor of Auckland City. Two candidates are announced for Mayoralty of Te Awamutu, the sitting Mayor, Mr A. S. Wallace, and Mr M. C. Lawson, president of the Chamber of Commerce.
A cablegram from Amsterdam announces the death of Dr. Zamenhof, of Warsaw, the inventor of Esperanto, which he hoped would become the universal language. Word has been received by Mr J. A. Thomas, of this district, that his son Reginald, who left with the 9th Reinforcements, and who is well-known in the Cambridge district, is suffering from a dislocated elbow, and is now in hospital at Walton-on-Thames.—Waha-roa correspondent.
Mrs R. Stapleton, of Hamilton East, lias received word that her son, LanceCorporal Claude Stapleton, is returning home. He left New Zealand with the Main Body, in the 3rd Auckland Infantry, and has seen service in Egypt, Gallipoli, and France, and on that battlefield he was wounded. After being in hospital in England for some time he is now being invalided back to New Zealand. »
