OPERATIONS IN EGYPT

18,000 OF THE ENEMY DECISIVELY DEFEATED.

GENERAL MURRAY'S REPORT

i „ GREAT PRAISE FOR AUSTRALASIAN MOUNTED TROOPS

(Australian and New Zealand and Reuter.) Received December 2, 8.50 a.m. LONDON, December 1. Genral Murray's despatch, dated October Ist, covers the operations in Egypt from June Ist to September 30th. General Murray, detailing the operations at Quatia, praises the work of the Australian and New Zealand Mounteds and the Australian Light Horse, who were employed in observing and harassing the enemy's advance. The complete result of the operations was the decisive defeat of 18,000 of the enemy, including 15,000 rifles. Four thousand prisoners were captured, and the total enemy casualties were about 9000. Major-General Chauvel, he states, proved himself a resolute and resourceful cavalry leader. The brunt of the whole fighting fell upon the Australian and New Zealand Mounteds, and General Murray says he cannot speak too highly of the gallantry, steadfastness and untiring energy which these fine troops have shown.
