Lieutenant H. S. Richards, Essex Regiment, who was the New Zealand Rhodes Scholar for 1915, has been wounded. Captain J. Coleman, who has been transferred from Hamilton to take charge of the new group at Wanganui, left for the south by last night's Alain Trunk express.
In the latest issue of tile Gazette it is notified that 2nd Lieutenants E. M. Stace, R. S. Alford and H. L. Vickerman, of the 16th (Waikato) Regiment are to rank as lieutenants as from September 19, 1916. It is announced that Mr John Cullen, Commissioner of Police, will retire from tlte Public Service on November 23. His time for retirement on the age qualification was due in May last, but he was induced to carry on for another six months at the request of the Government.
Word has been received in Hamilton from Colonel R. W. Cumming, the Officer-Commanding the 16th (Waikato) Regiment, who left for service abroad six months' ago. He is in command ef th* 6th Reserve Battalion ("The Dinkums") Rifle Brigade at Sling Camp, Salisbury Plains, and at the time of writing had had the opportunity to get in some sight-seeing in the "Big Smoke.'' The latest Gazette announces that Captain Alfred Ernest McDonald, of the 16th (Waikato) Regiment has been promoted to Major. Major McDonald, who left with the Main Body of Expeditionary Force was wounded in the shoulder on the day of the memorable landing of the New Zealanders on Gallipoli. He returned to New Zealand, and after a period of several months' medical treatment was pronounced as fit for duty again, and left with the Twelfth Reinforcements, being now on the Western frontier.
