THE EXHIBITION.

THE CARNATION SHOW. COMING ATTRACTIONS. (By Telegraph.—Special service.) CHRISTCHURCH, This day. The show of carnations and sweet peas, which opened in the main avenue of the Exhibition yesterday, is one of the best ever seen in the colony, the entries far exceeding the previous record of the United Horticultural Society, which is organising a display of exhibits to cover 9UO feet of tabling, while considerable floor space has been taken up by pot plants in addition to a beautiful display of s-weet . peas and carnations. The exhibits include a fine sample of pelargoniums, gladioli, and other flowers, ferns and fruits. A Sydney visitor expresses the opinion that he display of sweet peas is the finest yet seen in Austra-

lasia. The show was well attended and will he open again to-day. The Deputy-Mayor, Mr Payling, will give an address of welcome to the Besses o' tire Barn in the Exhibition concert hall this afternoon at three o'clock. Specially suitable items will bo rendered by the Exhibition Orchestra during the afternoon. Arrangements are complete for the evening leception by the local bandsmen and the first performance by the Band, v Inch takes place on the sport.* g).o>u ids. Mr Collins, of the Labour Department at Wellington, has arrived to classify and display to the best advantage the exhibits of sweated industries procured and forwarded to the Exhibition by the High Commissioner. The collection comprises a great variety of articles of clothing of all descriptions, chains, nails, children's toys and a great variety of other articles. The exhibit will be of undoubted interest and value to manufacturers and workers generally.

The Hon W. Hall-Jones, Minister for Railways, advises the general manager that he lias completed arrangements for cheap railway fares for special cheap trips from all centres with which Christchurch is connected by rail. The fares will be on the very lowest scale possible, the intentiou being to use the railway system concentrating in Christchurch as a feeder to the Exhibition. The Fijians, whose novel dances have been the great attraction of the Exhibition, and who have made themselves great friends' with many of the townspeople, leave on Friday on a short trip to Dunedin and the southern hikes. They will resume their performances at the Exhibition on their return. The fat. lambs show was one of the features of the Exhibition yesterday. Similar shows are given mo ithly by a local frozen meat coinpany, under the auspices of the Canterbury A. and P. Association, and attract much interest.

Wonderland's Horal fete, which is iixed for January 17th, has caused quite a stir among local florists and gardeners. Orders for blooms have been pla;ed with different nurserymen as far south as Tiinaru and one local lirm has received a preliminary order for IU,OUU sprays. Preparations are being made for a sensational lire rescue act, and numerous oJier hiirhly original and diverting attractions tire promised. by the Agricultural Department of arrangement and classification of its numerous and extensive wool

exhibit'obtained from all parts of the colony completes a very thorough representation of wool at the Exhibiton. No product of the colony is represented more fully than wool, and the excellent samples shown both in the Agricultural Court and in the provincial bays must prove of the very greatest interest and value to farmers. In the North Canter-

bury Court there is a very fine collection of merino, naif-bred, Cortfiedale, crossbred and long wools and Marlborough's display is also of especial eAcelllence. Some fine privato exhibits are also shown. The woolexhibit will probably be judged during the next few days.
