THE EXHIBITION.

(Br Tklegkaph.—Special to Wkiu.ro, \ j Times.) j CHRISTCHUECH, This Day. 1 The Exhibition was well attended „fl all day yetterday, and in the evfoing jj a tremendous crowd commenced pouring in from an early hour into 1 the buildings and grounds in expec- ! tation of the display of fireworks by Pain and Sons, London. The fernery is for many people the supreme delight and marKVl of the Exhibition. Its many varieties of beautiful ferns, its little creeks I and fountains and the dim light 1 which helps to give the impression of an actual corner of our native bush, draw an increasing number of admirers. Now its beauty has been increased, by night at any rat#, ■by hanging strings of little coloured lamps among the ferns, and these were lighted for the first time last night with a surprisingly beautiful effect. i Details of the reception of the | Besses o' th' Barn Band on Thursday are now all complete, and the function promises to be a very sinking feature of the Exhibition. The following are the official annotations to the Band's first programme, to be given on a specially built rotunda on the spoits ground on Thursday night:— The march • " Zealandia: " by A. Owen, was composed in honour of the Band's first visit to New Zf%Und, ( this being its first performance in J this country. The work is very inter- - N eating as Mr Owen has in a very masterly way employed the fullest powers of each instrumentalist; it is one of the most difficult marches to preform ever written. (^ Overture, " Poet and Peasant," Ihis brilliant composition is one of the Band's most popular numbers, wonderful execution and variety of tone and colour being very manifest. Cornet polka, " Cleopatra" (Demare), soloist, T. G. Moore: Mr Moore, who is one of England's finest cornet soloists, will be iuard to fullest advantage in this bright popular number, iutroducing, as it does, some brilliant triple tongning. Grand selection of Rossini's works, arranged by A. Owen: This work introduces much of the great composer's most popular operas, and is one of the great efforts that have made Mr Owen and his band famous.. In Paris particularly they were a wonderful reception after its performance and its rendition at Wind- - 4 sor before the King and Queen and the Royal Court led to its being enthusiastly redemanded. Walse il Jeunesse Doree (Wandteufel): Many charming effects will be noticed in this beautiful number. " Trombone solo, " Death of Nelson " (Brahm) : The soloist is Mr Tom Bowling, whose splendid interpretation of this old favorite always creates a furore. Operatic selection "Geisha" : The | selections are very effectively ar« : ranged, and introduce all theJfrelli known melodies. 1 National fantasia, " Reminiscenres . of England," (Godfrey) : This fan- > tasia, arranged by the late Fred . Godfrey, is considered by many to be the best of the many written by him. Many of the most famous and popular national airs will be heard during its performance. Entries for the International band contest, to be held from February j 11th to 10th, constitute a record' for the colonies and possibly for the British Empire. Thirty-seven bands | ( have entered for the selection and quick step competitions, including combinations from Auckland to 0 Bluff, and Newcastle City, and jj Code's Melbourne bands from 3 Australia; for the solo, quartette.and 2 trombone trio competitions, nomina* 1 tions have been made by thirty three bands, including Newcastle 3 City. The judge of the test and j "oa-u choice" selections, and the j music of the quickstep event will be j Lieutenant W. G. Bentley, of Sydney, ) a British Army Bandmaster of high ' musical reputation.
