HAMILTON ROWING CLUB.

OPENING OF SEASON, The opening of the Hamilton Rowing Clubs season took place on the Waikato river on Saturday afternoon, under a cloudy sky. A large crowd of spectators assembled in the vicinity of the b oatßheds, and keen interest was manifested in the various events. Pride of place must be given to the final for the Howden cup for crews from the different boarding houses. The first heat, between Murrayfield and Almadale, had been decided the previous evening, and supporters of both crews engaged were confident victory would lie with them. The end of the race, however, found Murray field about } of a length ahead of Abbotsford, and they accordingly have the iipnour of guarding the cup for a year. The orewi were as follows :

Murrayfield: S. F. Tyerman (stroke), F. C. Bond (3), F. L. Bockett (2), E. P. Stuart (bow). Abbotsford. C. Pollard (stroke), A. N. Baker (3), S. A. Empson (2), W. C, Coote (bow). The next most interesting event was the motor launch race, the first held in the district, three boats starting, namoly, Messrs G. A. Hurd-Wood's Taniwha (3 min), Henry Raohe's Minniehaha (4 mins), and Messrs Pocock and Gutheridge's Nita (scr). An exciting race was won by the Taniwha by a few lengths, the eoratoh boat being nowhere. The trial fours proved interesting, one or two very good finishes bfing seen.

First Heat: C. H. Holloway (stroke), M. R. Farrer (3), W. 0, Sne'l (2), McKenzie ibow) defeated C. F. Bond (strobe), F L. Bocket (3), C. Kenny (2), R. Bridgman ;bow) by three-quarter length. Second Heat: S. F. Tyerman (stroke), fi. P. Finlay (3), F. C. Bond (2). W. Broadfoot (bow), beat H. H. Edgecambe (stroke), J. C. Barton (3), A. P. Stuart (2) S. Lewis (bow), easily. Semi-final: Holloway's crew met C. Pollard (stroke). E. Bailey (3), G. L. Mahon (2), A. Manning (bow), and came home winners after a close contest.

Final: A good race between Tyerman and Holloway gave the former his third win that day and his fourth in the leries. During the afternoon the lady members and their friends " passed round the cup that cheers, but not inebriate 3." Altogether a most enjoyable afternoon waa spent, thanks chiefly to the labours of'the vice captain, Mr S. F. Tyerman, and the hon. secretary, Mr G. L. Mahon. The keen interest taken in the doings of the club augun well for the suocess of the regatta to be held at Hamilton on January 10 th, when several outside crews are expected to take part. The committee desire to thank the owners of the launches for their kindness in assisting to g.ve the publie a pleasant afternoon ; also to Messrs Green and Colebrook and Mr H. Upton for donating the prizes for the motor launch race.
