The Ven. Archdeacon Calder arrived in Hamilton yesterday. Mr II J. Greonslade, M.H.R., accompanied by Mrs Greenslade, arrived from the south by to-day's express, proceeding at once to Ohaupo.

Mr S. Rout, of Auckland, arrived in Hamilton last evening, tor the puipose of collecting donations of books for the libraries of the various local schools.

Bro. James Mackay, Grand Secrotary of the >iorth Island District, U.A.0.D., is retiring fruin that position, and at the biennial meeting to be held in February next the appointment of a successor will be dealt with. Bro. F. Jennings, who for the past twelve years has been secretary of the Excelsior Lodge, Wellington, will be a candidate for the position.

Mr David Asher died suddenly from heart failure at Wellington, yesterday, at the age of 76 years. Old Auckianderß will lemombdr that in the days deceased had a furniture dealer's business in Shortiand-streot. He was superintendent of the Fire Biigade under the old City Board, and was a most enthusiastic fire-tighter at a time when the meu had to drop the hose down the nearest well, and pump up the water bjfore they could attack the dunes. It is now many years since Mr Asher left Auckland, but his grandson was a member ot the City Fire Brigade. The deceased also took a prominent part in Fire Brigade work both in buneiin and Wellington. Mr David Asher, of Tauranga, is a son of deceased.
