BURGLARS IN CHRISTCHURCH.
♦ A SMART ARREST. (By Teleckaph.—Prkss Association) CHRISTCHUKCH, Nov. 17. For a considerable time this city has been subjected to the attentions of a bold gang of criminals. The list of burglaries has gradually grown larger, these daring thieves successfully eluding the vigilance of the police. Last night detectives arrested two men on a charge of burglary and the police believe they have been concerned in a long list of daring robberies. From eight o'clock on Thursday morning to five yes;erday evening, Detectives Ward and Gibson kept an unbroken watch upon the movements of two men, and they ultimately succeeded in arresting them Their names are Rawson and Howell. Rawson, when cornered, reached for a revolver, but before he could get it, Detective Ward placed his hand upon it, and hid the man quickly handcuffed. De:ective Gibson, after a short chase, secured the other man, and they werd both conveyed to the lock-up. Both wore | crape masks, and electric flash lamps were found in their possession. Rawsjn had a special pocket in his coat for a six chambered revolver, and i carried twenty-five loose cartridges. i There was no struggle. Howell and Rawson appeared i before the Court this morning, and j were remanded till November 26. ; The police not being ready with a I specific case of burglary, charged the I men with being idle and disorderly | persons, and with consorting with thieves. Bail was refused.
