DEATH OF COLONEL PITT.
(By Telegraph—Pkess Association) ' CHRISTCHUECH, This day. ( The Hon. Albert Pitt, AttorneyGeneral and Minister for Defence, died at 5.15 yesterday morning. He ; underwent a surgical operation on Tuesday last, and on Friday showed considerable improvement, but slowly -fank all day on Sat unlay and could not retain any nourishment. He \ continued to sink during the night j and at 4.40 a.m. asked for a cup of tea, which was given him. He then j fell into a deep slumber, and died peacefully in his sleep. Orders were given for the despatch of the Government steamer from Wellington to Lyttelton. She will reach port early on Monday morning and will wait until the arrival of the second express, which ' will bring the Premier and the Hon. J- A. Millar up from the south. The body will be placed on board and the steamer will leave direct for Nelson, where the interment will take place. l -It is understood that the funeral win not be a military one. The late s v fc*>linister's two daughters, who are at present in Christ church, his private secretary, the Premier, the Hon. J. A. Millar and probably % * Hon. W. Hall-Jones will journey by the Tntanekai in order to be present at the funeral. The late Col. Pitt was a native of Tasmania, where he was born about Co years ago. It was as a young man that he came from Hobait, and nettled in Nelson. He was a barrister and solicitor by profession, and one of the principals of the legal firm of Pitt and Moore. Colonel Pitt leaves a son in the service of the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company and two daughters—(Mrs McDonald, wife of au officer of the Telegraph Department at Cable Bay) and Miss Pitt. Interviewed the Premier said : " 1 deeply lament his death and the colony's loss. The Ministry has lost a careful administrator and a wise > and experienced counsellor. At the < present time I cannot, of course, discuss the future."
