A SHOCKING ACCIDENT.

IMPRISONED IN A MINE. (By Telegkapii,—Phkss Association') WAIHI, this day. A shocking accident occurred at the Waihi mine yesterday. Two miners named Gray and Boxall were engaged in sinking the No. 2 shaft below the No. 8 level, 850 feet down, and were caught like rats in a trap at the bottom of the shaft, owing to the winch driven by an air compressor failing to work at the critical moment. Ihe men had charged three holes in the bottom of the shaft, lighted the fuses and then signalled to the man in charge of the winch to haul them up. The bucket was drawn up a few and then dropped back, The men tumbled at the same time and their lights went out. All hope of escape by the bucket was abandoned and the men endeavoured to locate the ladder at the side of the shaft, but in the darkness, intensified by the smoke from the burning fuse, they failed to find it. Meanwhile the shots explod* ed one after the other. The wooder was that they were not killed outright. As it was they were terribly injured, Gray succumbiug a few hours later, while Boxall is in a precarious condition. An inquiry is to be held.
