From Our Own Correspondent. The monthly meeting of the Huntly Road Board was held on Saturday, when there were present: Messrs J. P. Bailey, J.P. (Chairman), R. T. Hill, Angus MacKinnon, and E. S. Wight. The Clerk intimated that the major portion of the rates had been paid, be was authorised to prosecute defaulters. Messrs D. Thompson and Son complained that a portion of the road at Ohinewai was in a very bad condition, and requested the Board to have the same repaired. The Clerk was instructed to inform them that in the carting of their flax they had not only broken one of the by-laws, but that as the damage to the road had been done by them, the Board would do nothing, complainants to make good all damage. For the purpose of obtaining the neoessary information re the formation of a Huntly borough, Messrs Bailey, Herd and Wight were appointed a sub-committee to report at next meeting. The Chairman was empowered to purchase a Bection at the auction by the Taupiri Coal Mines Ltd. A survey plan showing in detail a portion of the Great South and adjoining roads was received from Mr W. Tattley, surveyor, Auckland, from whioh it appeared that the Public Library and reading room and a portion of the railway pumping house were on the public road, and the clerk was ordered to write to the library trustees and to the railway authorities calling their attention to this, and asking them to remove the building at their earliest convenience. Notification that the sum of <£29 2s 9d had been plaoed in the bank to the Board's credit as a subsidy under the Local Bodies Act, 1885, was leceived. The fallowing accounts were passed for payment: Mrs Annie Proctor £l2; Messrs W. Spiers M 16s, D. Herd £3 2s 6d, Waikato Times 10s, Green and Colebrook 9s Bd, Public Account £l 63 Bd, W. J. Cox 4s 6d, A. V. Capper M 10s, J. Cheyne jnr, 10s. The Board as a body then proceeded to inspect Glasgow Road with a view to taking it over. The third of the series of football matches for caps presented by Miss Ralph for competition between teams representing the northern and southern ends of the township took place on Saturday, when the southerners proved the superior team, their backs throughout the matoh being too good for their opponents. The result was Southern team 15, Northern team nil. So far each side has scored a victory, the first match ending in a draw. The play was not of the most gentle description, a native Tarawhiti by name, having his leg fraotured and Daroy a severely injured ear. The former was carried to the chemist's shop where first aid was rendered by Mr F. Exon, and thence taken by the late train to the Hamilton hospital. A subscription te defray his expenses was taken up during the evening, soma six pounds odd being the result. There was inaugurated in the Wesleyan Church on Monday a branch of the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows. The district Grand Master, secretary and treasurer, Bros. Thomas Aitken, William Thomas and John MacLeod respectively, assisted by Bros. P. A. fctewart (N.G. Fount lin of Friendship Lodge) and VVm. Poole (Carrington Lodge,N.S. W.), conducted the opening ceremony and constituted the branch. The new lodge, " Hand of Friendship" by name, opened with some 21 members, the number being increased by a number of proposals for initiation at the next meeting. Office bearers were elected as follows :—Bro. Tom Toole, Master; Bro. George Limb, N.G.; Bro. John Clout, V.G.; Bro. Robert Coulson, permanent secretary ; Bro, James Fulton, treasurer; Bro. William Kirkwood, warden j Bro. George Morton, inner guardian; Bro. Robsrt Vickery, K.S.N.G.; Bro. John R. Limb, R.S.V.G.; Bro. Joseph Wrigheer, L.L.S.N.G. Addresses were deliverer by the visiting brethern, and at the conclusion of the proceeiings an adjournment was made to the Volunteer Hall where an enj )yable, though only fairly attended socia l took place. '1 he contractor for the school, Mr F. J. Matthews, of Auckland, commenced work on Thursday. From the plans the new school will be large, commodious and uptodate, well ventilate), light and airy, and an ornament to the townnhip. In aid of the funds of St. Anthony's (Catholic) church, x most successful social was held in the Volunteer Hall on Friday night when over fifty couples!'tripped the light fantastic" to the excellent music provided by Messrs W. W Northmora (piano), J. Mcintosh (cornet) and P. Darby (violin), The floor was excellent, and a nice supper was provided by the ladies of the congregation. Miss Lizzie Balph was vooal soloist of the evening, and Mr A. R. Davis performed his duties as M.C. in a highly efficient way. The oommittee, whose secretary was Mr P. J. Hassett, are to be congratulated on the success which has hitherto attended their efforts.

During the week the Taupiri Coal Mines were visited by Mr W. J. Ralph and Mr Gordon, director. They fount everything proceeding in the most satisfactory manner, and wore more than jatisfiod with the work of development now in hand. The good weather does not conduce to an increased output, all the mines having been closed down last Saturday.
