FLOODS IN VICTORIA.

GREAT DAMAGE. MELBOURNE, September 10. The flood in the Saltwater River is the highest for 40 years. It continued to rise during the early part of the day, but is now subsiding. No rain has fallen to-day, and reports from the various flooded districts show that the waters are falling. There is still, however, a lot of flood water to come down. This morning the districts round Footscray, Maribyrnong, Kensington and Brunswick were a vast expanse of water. In many streets, rescue boats were kept busy all night, removing residents. Many houses were deeply submerged, and some were wrecked and swept away. The Flemington racecourse is covered six feet deep, ana it is feared that it is extensively damaged. The training tracks suffered considerably. The most disastrous effects occurred at the abattoirs and stockyards yesterday, where about £20,000 worth of sheep was yarded. At daylight to-day, a large portion of the yards, which are on the banks of the Saltwater River were submerged to a depth of ten feet,
