Local and General.

The British Admiralty has commissioned Messrs Denny Brothers, of Dumbarton to design and build an experimental destroyer of a thousand tons displacement and with a speed of 33 knots. The following (says the Dunodin Star) has some bearing on the alleged " enoruious profits " of the Home steam iines: A Home steamor has j'ust visited this port and departed leaving a frightful " bill of costs " behind her. When all charges were added up it was found that the total payments attendant on entering, leaving, berthage, stevedoring, etc., amounted to no less than 75 per cent, of the gross awnings for the port. And this was without counting in coal, wages, and providoring. A correspondent of the Wellington Evening Post, criticising Mr J. G. Harkness' knowledge of the dairying industry, says Wellington is the centre of the dairy industry, and backs up his statement by quoting from Mr Kinsolla's report to show thit while the Wellington Taranaki district has 492 butrsr factories, Auckland has only 119, Christchurch only 12, and Otago and Southland c 'mbinsd 100. Had he quoted Mr Kinsella's report correctly (says the Taranaki Herald) ho would have seen that Taranaki has 3SO and Wellington only 112 of the 'l*J2 factories he credits to the two districts. Thus Taramki, not Wellington, cm claim to be the centrb of the industry. Eomombor! We keep a coniple stock of Arthur Yates' reliable seeds. Half-*-crown's worth of meat was a subject of contention at the VVanganui S.M. Court the other morning. The Freezing Company recently took over two meac businesses in the town, and with a view of clearing off the book debts sent out accounts to all debtors. One bill, amounting to half-a-crown, was sent to the losal librarian, who, having a receipt for the amount in question, waxed wroth, and in a note to the company, remarked that "if the blithering idiot who sent the bill said he (the librarian) owed half-a-crown he was a liar of the kind found in perdition." The company, convinced that the librarian was barking up the wrong tree, had a summons issued, and the alleged defaulter appeared before the magistrate. Ha duly produced the receipt, which he had told the company he possessed, and the company's representative, seeing no way of getting round it, did the only thing possible, viz., withdrew the claim.

A well-attended meeting of the employees in flourmills in and around Dunedin was held on Saturday evening, when it w..s resolved, " That this meeting views with strong disapproval and alarm the proposed reciprocal treaty now before Parliament. This treaty proposes to admit Australian flour into New Zealand free of duty. Such a course would mean the ruin of the flourmilling industry ia New Zealand, and as a consequence hundreds of mill operatives would be thrown out of employment, bringing much hardship on themselves and those depending upon their earnings for support. While generally in sympathy with reciprocity, we maintain that the interests of the workers should be the first consideration of our representatives, and any alteration to the existing tariff will be so far-reaching in its effects that it will act prejudicially not only to ourselves, but the farm labourers also. We sincerely trust our protest will receive the most careful consideration of the Government."

The euchre party and danoe arranged by the sub-committee of the Hamilton Bowling Club was a success iu every way. Despite the wretched weither, over 70 were present, all taking part in the games. During the two hours devotod to euohre twelve games were played, with the result that Mesdames Ross and Stevens sored lU, the former winning on the play off. Mr R. Bradley, \vho owing to the rain keeping many ladies away, had to rank as one of the fair sex, showed the incongruity of the role by capturing the booby prize. Mr E. de V Aietiarrigle appropriated the first prize for gentlemen, wito eleven wins, Mr F. T. Wilson gaining second after playing off with Messrs Revell audPearaon, 10 all. Mr R. Bridgman was presented with the booby's share. After supper, generously provided by lady friends of members, dancing was entered into with zest, to the music of Mesdames Lawrence and Ross and Mr Tutschka (piano) and Mr Page (violin). Midnight saw the close of a very successful party.
