Teasdale said he had great pleasure in supporting the proposition, as the Clerk had proved himself very efficient, and had given great satisfaction. Engineer,—Allen thought that , before an engineer was appointed the Couucil should have some.idea as to how much money it was intended to spend. He said there was only £6OO available for works, and he did not see why the Council should pay an engineer £2OO to spend it—Cr. Fawkes thought there was no necessity to go round so often, and con* sidered four times a year would be sufficient.—The Chairman said it. would not be often enough. - The engineer had a lot of work to do, and was nearly always on the road. —Cr. Teasdale said a great deal of work had been done by the engineer. If they (Hided to do without one, it meant councillors trying . to do the work, and he should be very sorry to see them having to look after their own districts, When the engineer was appointed the salary- was £'2so a year, and when they got into debt it was reduced by £SO, on the understanding that as soon as they got clear of debt it should be risen. Whatever work Mr' Armstrong had been given to do he had done it in a very satisfactory manner, and he did, not think . it: at all fair to reduce his-salary.—Cr. Finch thought that if they wanted the work done well, they had a good servant, and they should stick to him. He said the engineer had bigger district now than formerly, and consequently more work.—The Chairman thought the engineer's salary was rather high.—Cr. Allon said when the former ckrk had held office he received £l5O a year, and many persons thought they could not do without him ; but on tenders being called an (fficient clerk had been obtained for £9O a year, and he saw no reason why they could not get the engineers work dore for less, He proposed that the salary be reduced to £l5O a year.—This w;is seconded by Cr. Mandeno.-Tlie .Chairman thought they should give Mr Armstrong the first show,, and •if he declined to take the position jt would be time enough then to talk

of advertising for a new engineer.—Cr. Teasdale did not think that the engineer could make a living at that rate, and moved as an amendment that ho bo allowed £l6O a year.—Ci\ Finch seconded the. amendment.—Cr. Allen said he would be the first one to raise the engineer's salary if they could afford it.—On being put to the meeting, the amendment was carried, the voting being as follows : For: Crs. Teasdale, Kusabs, Vickers, Finch and Smith. Against: Crs, Fawkes, Mandein and Allen,-Cr. Allen then proposed as a farther amendmeut that the engineer's salary should be £150.-Cr. Fawkes seconded, and the voting was, vice versa.—Mr Armstrong said it was' not very satisfactory after ten years' ser.' vice to have co face reductions.
