Lord Glasgow will visit the Auckland and Campbell Islands early in January. An infant named Jas. Henry Gardiner, aged 18 months, met its death at Wakarimo, Marlborough under peculiar circumstances. The child was left asleep in its cot and or the mother's return in a few minutes she' found him hanging by the chin and the back of the head between the handrail and the side of the cot quite dead. It is surmised that deceased awoke during his' mother's absence and falling backwards became jammed in the position in which he was found, and being unable to extricate himself was strangled. NAPIER, Last Night. The new Roman Catholic Church, St,' Patrick's, in Munro-street, was consecrated yesterday, Archbishop Redwood and Bishop ' Luck being present, The collection totalled over £2OO. Information has been received that the graves of the Hapuka family at Te Hauke have been desecrated, and the police have ' been sent to investigate the matter. The natives are in a great state of excitement' and consternation. Four large concrete slabs, each weighing about four hundred-, weight, were removed from the vault and'. several coffins rudely disturbed, evidently with the idea of obtaining the treasure' supposed to be buried with the chiefs, but' the thieves were disappointed and nothing' was removed. The last chief buried there' was Wataane Hapuka, four years ago, and tlw marauders had remove:! the two top coffins before they could get at that containing the body'of another old chief, buried' sixteen years ago. The affair is at present' a mystery, but so long a time has elapsed since the vault was visited it is feared that the culprits may remain undiscovered. Hone Hapnka, the present chief, says he is determined to have, the vault properly' cemented over. DUNEDIN, Last Night. Bishop Neville, at the opening of the' Anglican Synod, denounced tho Divorce' Bill. ' • John McLaren, an expressman at Lawrence, was found dead in Weatherstone's'' Creek on Saturday morning.
