NEWCASTLE ROAD BOARD.
Thk ordinary meeting of the above wa3 held at the Board's office, Ohote, on Wed» nesday. Present: Messrs Oorboy (chairman),, Blaclcefct. Bycroftaud Shepherd, the minutes were read and confirmed. Correspondence was read re the Te Kowhai native .obstruction, including the petition from the settlers interested and the reply (already published) from the Crown Lands Office, advising the Board to take whatever land was required under " The Public Works Act." The Chairman recommended that a narrow strip of river frontage, comprising about three acres, should be taken under the Act for road'and river landing purposes, This was agreed to; the necessary steps will be taken forthwith, A letter was received from Mr J. S. Tole requesting that his name be removed from the valuation roll for certain lands in Hirihiri, and that Henry Hinton be substitute.!. The request was acceded to. A letter was read re Mr E. Rice's rates, which stated that the clerk had been notified to remove his name from the The clerk reported that no authority had been given him to remove Mr Rice's name in respect to the sections ob* jected to, consequently he had no power to do so, It was decided that the collector's action/in recovering these rates be endorsed, the chairman pointing out that almost every application to transfer names upon the rolls, if made in writing, was acceded to. But' it was necessary that all who desired such changes should notify the Board in writing. A letter upon the same subject was received from Mr A. Curbett, stating that the rates upon his farm should have been paid by the occupier Mr Barford. The collector reported having applied for previous rates to Mr Barford, but had not received them ; consequently the owner, Mr Corbttt, was called upon to pay, and, in this case, the uates in dispute were incurred during Mr Corbett occupancy. A communication was received from the Public Trustee re certain information about the proposed road through Knorp'p estate. The Clerk was directed to reply that the total area required would be under one acre; and the construction of the road, would enhance the value of the estate. A petition from Wilcox Bros, and twelve other ratepayers was received, requesting that some improvements be made upon the old Hamilton road. After some discussion, it was decided that Mr Jones as being the most able diplomatist should interview Mr Kennedy the owner of the land, over which the present track passes, re conveying it to the Board, and report at the next meeting. Accounts were passed to Messrs Wilcox, Rotluvell, Bycroft, and Carder Bros., when the Board rose.
