WRECK OF THE WAIRARAPA.

In Memoriam. Mr heart is filled with sorrow as I write, Of that sad wreck upon that dreadful night. The hope inspires me as I read the pages, That all were resting on the Rock of Ages, The ancient patriarch and the tiny babe, All alike sank in to the roaring wave ; Brave women sacrificing self to cheer, sustain, What an example to us who remain. So that we live unselfish lives and be prepared, To share with others as that sister shared, Who gave her lifebelt to the little child, Sinking herself amidst the breakers wild. Farewell dear sufferers in that dark strife, You now are dwelling in the eternal light, The Saviour smiles upon you and rewards, The martyrs by an endless life of love. A.C.T. Whatawhata.
