AUCKLAND NEWS.
(by telegraph.-own correspondent). Auckland, Last Night. Hons. Jennings and Mitchelson and Messrs Massey and Lang, M.H.K.s., were passengers per Mahmapua, which arrived from the South to-day. The funeral of the late Hon. P. Dignan to-day was largely attended. The police authorities were informed this SrTSu c h M a woman named Elizabeth Sully, aged 19 years of age, had: attempted suicide by taking matches at tho Criterion laundry m Albert-street, Sergeant W. Lyons made inquiries into the matter and the young woman was removed to the hospital. Miss Sully had been in the employ of Mrs Wheeler for about four months as laundress. She came to Auckland from Brisbane. The Star's Whangarei correspondent writes:—That the long spell of dry weather is somewhat retarding crops, particularly fruit. Peaches will be scarce owing to the heavy rain, when tha trees were m bloom. Onions will also be scarce when most wanted, owing to the dry weather, The early figs were severely used by the bfe frost in September, and will bo a small crop. Plums are looking well,.and setting for a big crop. The weather so far is in favour of the outdoor grapes, The American blackberries as usual promise a big crop, but garden crops are at a stand still foe want of rain,
