The watering places en route are picturesque' spectacles, and every evening they aresurrounded by hundreds of camp fires. Thejrush to the field continues unabated, and fresh discoveries are reported daily. - The Newcastle Town Council has; agreed to urge the municipalities of the colony to ask the Government to invite Mr.Gladsone to visit Australia. March 21. In the Legislative Assembly last night the Mortgages Suspension Bill, which was designed to afford concession to mortgagors during thepresent period of depression, came on for the second reading. Several speakers justified the Bill on theground that the leniency shown to the banks should be extended to their customers. Sir G-. Bibbs said if such a Bill were carried it meant further reconstruction of the banks in liquidation. The measure, in his opinion, was highly dangerous. The motion for the second reading was,carried by 39 to 31. "When, the Bill got into committee the proceedings degenerated into a bur* lesque. A scene occurred through Mr Edden accusing the Premier of receiviug £3OOO from the Banks for passing the Bank Bill, Sir (j. R. , Bibbs immediately jumped up and characterised this statement as " an. infamous lie." Mr Cook became involved in the wrangle which eventually ended in both Messrs Edden andCook apologising, and withdrawingthe statement to which exception had been taken. The Bill was so mutilatedby the committee that the promoters deserted it in disgust, and the Housewas counted out.
