I.N .-metlift - portion of lliis issue Air .T. li. Wliyte, whilst, noall the jm.sl- favors bestowed ujioii him Ly tile electors nf Waikato notifies them, thai, Ijt? does not intend to seek re-election at their hands at tin; forthcoming elf-el ion. This decision does not cumo us a sur-

prise, «nee it has been generally known for some time passed that Mr AVhytc had made up his mind to this course. In bidding farewell to his jjolitic.al friends Mr Wliyte strongly urges them to accord to his successors the same libertv of action vouchsafed to hiin in the past, deprecating forcibly the present tendency of sending representatives to Parliament as mere delegates. This parting advice from their old and respected member will doubtless have its due weight with the constituency, more especially as Mr Bryce will probably be the only candidate, and it is scarcely to be supposed that any action of this kind would be attempted in his ease; his reputation and past record will relieve him from any anxiety on this head. In bidding farewell to Mr Whytc we feel sure we can only faintly re-echo the sentiments of regard in which he is held by all who have had the good fortune to come in contact with him either pDlitically or socially. That he has justified the confidonce that was reposed in him has been proved time and again, and we cannot close these remarks without expressing regret that Mr Whyte and men of his stamp should withdraw from political life. Upon such men the country has a claim, and we trust the day is not far distant when Mr Wliyte will again enter the arena of politics and bestow upon the colony the benefit of his services and matured judgment.
