Owing to a steward on the steamer Moravia, nt. Luith. refusing to join the Seamen's Union, the crow mid dockers struck.
The Hhipowncrs' Federation engaged anoiiUnioncrew and dockers who wont to work under police protejtion Similar action is to be taken, as other cases arise whatever the consequences may be. The Southampton dockers have struck till their union has obtained ;i recognition of their demands, and they are supported by the coal porters, seamen and tiremeu. All trade is paralysed in consequence. Pickets arc stopping trains between the station and the dosks, Sixty policemen who were sent down from London to reinforce the local division were roughly handled, and everything points to a riot being imminent. The mails will not be interfered with at Southampton, so long as the free labourers are not brought into the town. An association of employers and
workmen in the British Channel and Docks is being established for the purpose of promoting harmony, freedom of contract, and general cooperation for the interest of all. September 0. A foroc of military has been despatched to Southampton to preserve order.
