CABLE SUBSIDY.
(by electric telegraph— copykight.) London, June 2(5. At an interview with Mr W. L. Jackson, M.P., Financial Secretary to the Treasury, the Agents-General reiterated the request that the Imperial Government should contribute towards the cable subsidy and guarantee. In reply, Mr Jackson implied that Mr Goschen's answer would probably be unfavourable. June 26. The English officials declare there is no precedent for the colonies asking England to contribute to the cable subsidy, but if the colonies pay the guarantee lossup t0£22,000, England might contribute the additional £15,000. At an interview to-day, the Agents-General urged that it would be good policy on the part of England to act jointly with the colonies, as the matter was one of general importance. Mr Jackson promised to again consult Mr Goschen, but implied that, the insistance of the double demand would probably .result in the refusal of both.
