LATEST WELLINGTON NEWS.
(by teleguaph.—press association). Wellington, Last Night. The UnionJCompany's steamer Cairntoul today had her name changed to Taieri, after the river of that name in the South Island. Some anxiety is felt for the safety of the barque Assaye, which is now 132 days out from London to Wellington. A vessel which arrived here a month ago crossed the Equator on the same day as the Assaye. The order removing Detective Campbell from Wellington to Ohristchurch has been countermanded. The fishing cutter Telephone (12 tons) has been wrecked at Orongorongo, having been driven ashore by a southerly squall. The crew were landed safely. C. S. Forbes, shipping engineer, aged 23, sou of a ship chandler at Lyttleton, has been missiug from tho Porirua Hotel for some days. He was in low spirits, and it is feared he may have done away with himself. Capt. Hightnan, secretary of the Mercantile Marine Officers Association of New Zealand, had a meeting with representatives of ship-owners at the Union Co.'s office this afternoon. A lengthy and friendly discussion ensued, and it is expected that a settlement will be arrived at in a few days.
