CAMBRIDGE ATHLETIC SPORTS.

The Cambridge Athletic Club held its farat annual meeting on Easter Monday in Mr John Sharp's paddock on the Hamilton Koad. Notwithstanding the threatening aspect of the weather, and the counter attractions at Hamilton, everything passed off in a very satisfactory manner. Many whom duty called away in the morning to attend the raview returned as early as they could, and helped to swell the number already collected on the ground. The Cambridge Cavalry Band arrived about 2 o'clock p.m. and under the able leadership of Mr Mackintosh enlivened the proceedings with their cheerful strains.

The sports instead of beginning at 11 a.m. as advertised, were postponed until 1 p.m. in order to afford everyone a better chance of witnessing the principal events of the day. The following programme was faithfully carried out, and some of the best running ever done in Waikato took place, every race being closely contested. The first event on the card was the ,1. 150 yds Maiden Eace; entrance fee, 2s 6d. Ist prize, 40s ; 2nd prize, 10s. Eight entered. J. McKinnon, 1; J. Larkins, 2. Robert Fergusson, James Fergusson, A. Whitehouse, Edwards, Cleary, Roberts. McKinnon got away with a slight lead, and held it all through though Larkins pressed him very closely at the finish. 2.250 yds. Cambridge Cup, (value £8). Entrance, ss. Ist prize, "100s; 2nd prize, 40s. Heath conditions named on the ground. First Heat.—James Fergusson, (1), 24yds.; W. C. Ring, (2), scratch; A. Whitehouse, (3), 24yds; McMillan, 10yds; E. O'Hare, 12yds; J. JLarkins, 15yds. Second Heat.—Robt. Fergusson (1), 18yds.; A. McKinnon (2), Byds.; R. Brennan (3), Byds.; E. Roberts (4), 20yds. Final Heat.—A. McKinnon (1), Iyds.: W. C. Ring (2), scratch. This heat was run on Tuesday afternoon, and was almost a dead heat. Ring tried to take up the inside running, just before coming into the straight, b«t having to turn a rather sharp corner, he had to check his speed a little, to avoid spiking McKinnon, who was just leading, and although he put on a tremendous spurt, he failed to recover his ground. 1. 120 yds. Handicap.—Boys Race, under 15 years. Entrance, Is. Ist prize, l 15s; 2nd prize, 10s; 3rd prize, ss. H. Camp (1), Byds.; Norgrove (2), Byds.; Carneghan (3), scratch. 4. Running Hop, Step and Jump. Entrance, Is. Prize, 265. Jas. McNeish, 1; J. Larkins, 2; G. McCann. McNeish cleared 39 feet in fine style., 5. Standing Long Jump, with Aveights. Entrance, Is. Prize, 10s. Jas. McNeish, 1; J. Larkins, 2; E. BrindJe, 3. McNeish came off victorious again, clearing 10ft. 7£in. 6. 100 yds. Handicap Race. Entrance, ss. Ist prize 60s; 2nd prize, 20s. Ist Heat: W. C. Ring (1), scratch ; E. O'Hare (2), syds.; J. McNeish, 6yds; C. Roberts, 10yds; Jas. Fergusson, 14yds. 2nd Heat: A. Whitehouse (I), 14yds; A. McKinnon (2), syds.; R. Brennan, 4yds.; R. Fergusson, 8 yds.: J. Edwards, 14yds. Final Heat: W. C. Ring (1), E. O'Hare (2), A. Whitehuse (3). This was a very close race indeed, Ring only passing O'Hare about two yards from the tape. Time: lOfsecs. 7. Running Long Jump.—J. McNeish . (1), J. McKinnon (2). 8. 1 Mile Walking Match Handicap.— T. Gerrans (1), 100 yds.; G. McCan (2), scratch. 9. Vaulting with Pole.—Jas. McNeish (1), J. Larkins (2). 10. 300 yds. Larkins, 25yds.. This concluded the sports for the day, and everybody went' away with the appearance of having thoroughly' enjoyed themselves. On Tuesday, for the 440yrd. handicap there were twelve entries. Ist prize, 60s; 2nd (prize, 20s. A. Jones (1), 3oyds; T. Gerrans (2), 35yds. 2.100 yds Handicap. Boy's race under 12 years. C. Rose, 1; H. Camp, 2. 3. Standing High Jump, won by Keesing. Running High Jump. McNeish took Ist prize at 4ft. llin. H. Keesing was 2nd. Throwing the cricket ball. John Campbell threw it 87yds. 12in. and took the prize. Tilting at the Ring. T. Gerrans, Ist; Walter Smith, 2nd. Major Hay accted as judge, anf Messrs J. Rhodes and J. McNeish as Starters. On Monday evening, the DoranTroupo played to a very crowded house.
