The land revenue up to cue eud of ! the quarter ending the 31st March, realised £760,000, the estimate for the year vas £1,227,000, ao that it is now practically certain there will be, as has been anticipated by the Colonial Treasurer for some time past, a large deficit in the revenue from land. The deficit will, however, probably be more than covered by an increase in the receipts from the Customs, Railways, &c. Eor the three first quarters of the year the railway revenue has been £520,000, of which £211,000 has been paid in during the quarter. The fourth and last quarter always

shows the largest returns, as nearly all the grain is carried during- this quarter, and, at a moderate estimate, about £250,300 should be realised before the close of th financial year, making a total of £760,000. The Colonial Treasurer estimated the railway revenue at ,£719,000, but this amount will certainly be largely exceeded. The working expenses on many lines have also been largely reduced under the present administration, so that the proportion of profits to receipts will be eonsiderrbly larger than the past years, and below the estimated expenditure. NEW PLYMOUTH, Tuesday. Mr Sheehan was occupied all yesterday morning in discussing matters re the Waimate Plains with Mr Mackay, Major Brown, and Mr Parris; and in the afternoon received several deputations. The future movements of Mr Sheehan are not known. It is said he will remain for a few days. DUNEDIN, Tuesday. The money received for the relief of the sufferers by the mining'

disaster at Kaitangata, at the present 2£nnA m u Unts t0 befc ween and *'UUO, but great numbers of lists are not yet to hand. It seems probabe that the total amount £IO,OOO to»£12,000. Since the date of tne accident three children were born, and it is probable that several others will be added to the list of those who must be provided for out of the funds. Weekly allowance is made to widows, according to their needs. A general scheme will be adopted by the committee when the full amount of the fund has been ascertained. Collectors are urgently requested to forward their colled ions to the secretary at once. The Hon. Mr Stout is still con* nued to his room, but is recovering rapidly. e
