Napier, Thursday. Mr Sealpy, tho Resident Migistrato and Crown Lands Commissioner, announces liis intention of instituting an action for libel against the Daity Ttlegraph for an attack upon him in his latur capacity. The Key John Cum .bell, late rector of the High School, Chnstchurch, is appointed head master of the Nupier Boy'a Trn«t School. Another tannery is about to bo established here. The land for the premises hot been bought. Currying and japanning will also 1 be carried on. The proceedings in the Deed of Cession Court were finally closed to-day by the Judges. All the land over which its jurisdiction extended, except the Pahitaki block, which has been definitely arranged by bein<j given over to the Government, is being returned to the natives pursuant to the arrangement made bv Major Atkinson, the Crown Agent, in 1869. The lands m the hands of the natives in the Poverty Bay district are now under the operation of the Native Lands Act. The natives express complete satisfaction. There was no attempt made to disturb the proceedings. Tne purchase of the Mo-u block, about 70,000 acres of excellent agricultural land, about 30 miles from Gi.-borne, rvi tl-e ro'i-l to Opotiki, is about being completed by the Government. It is partly timbered. Wellington, Thursday. Ten miles water-pipes have been laid, and the water laid on 'Iline wi-re verj £-w breakages. The Auckland cricketers will arrive here to-morr >w. It is extremely probable that another extraordinary session of the Provincial Council will be tailed to pau the bill authorising the expenditure of £50,000. A subscription hut. for the benefit of the wife and family of the lute Captain House has b»>en opened. All the immigrants by the Helen Denny, excepting six, were immediately engaged. These were taken up to Wairarapa, unuer the temporary charge of the Resi <ent Magistrate. Dunedin, Thursday. Mr Vogel has telegraphed to the Superintendent that he intends visiting Dunedin next week. The handicapping for the Dunedin Cup, in March, 1874, is considered the best that has ever appeared in Dunedin. Tiie number of nominations wine i have been liansmitted to the Agent-General this mail is: —English, 308j Scotch, 145 -; Irish, 68; Danes, 73 ; Prussians, 13. The Times states thut the 9tandard Insurance Company is flouted and tho local directors and agents appointed in the different province*. It al»o states that as the result of Mr Reids mission the projected companies ir.Christchurch and Wellington have been abandoned. The Standard is meeting with great success. Tne presentation of a. watch and chain, with goto" necklace, hns been made by the Presbyterians to Dr and Mrs Begg, who leave for Melbourne. The bakers hare resolved to reduce the working hours from twelve to eight. Nelson Thursday. Over four thousand people were at the Exhibition since noon to-d»y. There is a magnificent display at the Horticultural Show. Tne Committee have determined to keep it open that people from Keefton on Monday and Tuesday can arrive, and the excursionists from elsewhere. r lhc Exhibition is a splendid success, notwit standing bad weather. Three thousand persons were present. Judge Richmond delivered an interesting impromptu address on being reminded that this was the centenary of Captain Cook's second departure from New Zealand. The exhibits, especially those of local manufactures, are greatly admired.
