The Church of England Synod commenced to-day. Bishop Neville delivered a long address. The principal matters to treat of are standing committees, visitations in the diocese, ordination, consecrations, examination of lehonls on religious knowledge, and theological college. " An inquest held on Ann McConnor returned a verdict died from natural causes. The Provincial Government promises to survey the harbour at the close of the year. A fire broke out in George streot at two o'clock this morning, when a strong gale from the south-wesb w«s blowing. Davie, grocer, stock insured for £2CO in the .South British, and building for £200 in the Scottish Commercial; Mr Jollie, cutler, building insured for 100 in Norwich Union, and £100 on stock in the same office. Mr Johnson, tailor, was not insured ; his loss is £100. Mr Merries loss is £300. The origin of the fire is unknown. Mr and Mrs (Schmidt, who were burnt out at four o'clock this morning, are badly burnt ; also one of the brigade Four houses burnt were insured for £1390.
