New interest has bten added to the trial of the Claimant bj John Line, luto steward of the barque Osprey, having deposed, with great circumstantiality, to having picked up a boat containing claimant, off the 'Brazilian coast, in the Spring of 1854. He further deposed that the Osprey took the claimant to Melbourne. His evidence caused a strong sensation. Henry James, whose eeat became vacant on accepting the office cf Solicitor-General, ha* been re-elected for Taunton. One of the indictment* against Marshal Bazaine, whose trial has been postponed till after the evacuation of French territory by the German troops, is "That he tampered with the positive orders of the Emperor Napoleon not to jeopardise the army." The rigorous enforcement of the law against Roman Catholics in Germany has caused the Pope to write to the Emperor William urging relaxation. To this letter the Emperor replied that Roman Catholics in his Empire are an organised political party sowing religious discord, and that the attitude of the Catholic clergy amounts to open revolt.
