The Annie Melbuish was seized this morning on the patent slip, by thr Deputy-Marshall of tlio Vice-Admiralty Court, at the suit ol the New Zealand Steam Shipping Company, for £2,000 salvage. The inquiry regarding the grounding of the Ladybird in the Mnnukau was continued to-day. Several passengers deposed that Captain Daniel was intoxicated at the time, but the steward, coot, and several able seamen swear that the captain was sober. Mr Drnmfield, Mayor of Welling! on, re! ires from seeking re-election in consequence of the severe criticism of the Post. Tuesday. In the Supreme Court a rule nisi was made absolute for crimiinl libel prosecution by Jvdge lio^an against Ballance, proprietor of the Wanganui Herald. The William Tapscott Crew Defence Subscription Fund is being largely increased. Six thonsaml shares in the National Insurance Company are applied for in Wellington. Lyttelton, Monday. Mr G. Mackay has been appointed agent for the New Zealand Shipping Company in Lyttelton. Mr Coster, manager of the New Zealand Bank, goes home to mnnage the Shipping Company, at a salary reported at £2500. Mr Gould has resigned in consequence. Mr Studholme has been appointed in his place. It is stated Mr Mackay is to receive £500 per annum as agent in Lyttelton. Christchurch, Tuesday. A remarkable instance of prolificness in & flock of sheep, is recorded at Pigeon Bay. In a Hock of pure-bred Leieeßters, one ewe dropped four l.imos. all healthy, and twenty others dropped tiiplets, so that twenty-one ewes have produced sixty-four lambs. Nearly the whole of the remainder that have latr.bed have produced twins. Hokitika, Tuesday. Judge Gresson, in charging the Grand Jury, referred to the want of a penal establishment for the colony for the classification and instruction of criminals. He said it was the duty of jndges to raise their voices against the inconsistency of spending money lavishly on education, and at the •nine time withholding u email sum to preserve the youth of the colony from contamination.
