CORRESPONDENCE. We do not necessarily endorse the opinions expressed by our correspondents.]

To the Editor of the Waikatq Times. Sin, — I think it was very ill-judged of Mr Mackay to single out two officers in a department when all served him so well. The G .vernment, through the department, will know the olllces where the most work was clone, and wlio did it, without being told by Mr Mackay. Those who haw watched the game of politics in New Zealand know that men do not rise m departments by merit or seniority, but by such lifts a« Mr Mackays and general wire pulling. Then again, his ti fuelling companion, Constable Collins, a very good man — bet ter perhaps there- is not in the force j but I venture to say there are plenty as good, and I am certain there is not a man of equal standing in the force who would not have done the work as well. The Constabulary as a body are men of character ; many are gentlemen by education and connection. Promotion and encouragement are by no means numerous. Had Mr Mackay'i voice been raised in his report by a protest against a body of savagot being paid and clothed the same as the Constabulary he would have been doing a public duty, and people would hare thought that ho had as much interest and regard for the white man as tke Maori. To make such invidious distinction where all are equally deserving is ungenerous, injudicious, and implies a bias, to say the least. Vox Populi, Cambridge.
