[AUVrRTISEiIEXT.] CRAIG Y. IUCPARLANE. To tlie Editor of tlie Nkw Zkajvvxd lleakaid. SIR, — In giving 7ny evidence in tho Supreme Court, on jlonday last, to Mr llcbkcth's questions, I said to him, "You and jour firm li.ne dono all you could to rum ma by keeping tin- died of ru wife's property in your office for our one \eir n,d d • c months without registradun .iiid b\ i.mvt^inn tlie Iv-l portion to J. S. Maefarlano uitliout my knowledge." Mrflt-luth denied it, and elial1< nged me to \no\e it I accept Die challenge with all my licnit Tlie ]]articular4 are as follow :—: — ' On the 20t!i May, 1870, Mr Laseelles, golicilor, mado out a deed, at my request, conveymcr four farms to my wife, Saiah Crait;, when I was all right and out of debt and \NOith o\er £20,000 all < !car. 1 signed tlio deed in Mr Laxcilr ■>' ofliee on (lie 27th May, 1870, in the presence of Mr J Burtt, n<j tru«tee. Mr Laseelles h < .ing to go to the . lli.i'ites to liiannge Mr R. Graham's estate, called with me utMoksrs Heskcth and Richmond's otliee, about the beginning of June, IS7O, and handed Mr Richmond the deed, in mj presence, tying, "I have sen rehed the Registry Office and found all correct ; you have nothing to do but register them." I went to the Registry Office yesterday, and had the deedß in my hand, and found they wero not registered till the 27th March, 1872— just one year and tenmonths to u day. In the month of March, 1872, my ion, Hujrli Craig, when he t.avv how things were going to ruin, asked his mother how much property she had She replied, " I have tlio two allotments coiner of Gralinme and Hard inge streets, conveyed to mo in 18<>6, and tho f.irms at Taurnnga." Ue said, " Are you sure ?" His mother replied, "Your father conveyed them to me." Hugh Craig made enquiries in March 1872, and found the farmi were not registered. He enquired the reason. Mr Richmond said, " I havo no inonpy." Hugh Craig there and then gave him £5. I have Mr Richmond., receipt for the same. To show the untruthfulness of Mr Richmond's reply, I state, and can prove, ho received in cash £70 in the month of June, 1870, viz., from a native called Rehia, half-brother to the late William Thompson, Native King, £50 ; 30th June, cheque Bank of New Zealand, £20 ; lGth July, ditto, ditto, £23; Bth September, dtto, ditto, £2t— in all £119. Let tho public understand that I signed an agreement about the 12th July, 1870, written by Mr Richmond, and signed m Ins office, and registered in the Supreme Court From tli&t dato lam held harmless from all law expenses whatever relating to the Wangapoa law case. Tina is the deed referred to whou I was conveying in trust to Mr J. S. Mucfarlane about thirty farms on the East Coast fauraii(i:i district, along with jjbout four thousand acres timber 1 Hid. It was in this deed thnt the best part of my ]>i >perty wa9 improperly included. Among «o many deeds 1 did not notice this one. This is the form that tlie generous liberal, and open-minded gentleman, Mr J. S. Macfarlnne, convened to my wife (her own property), when lie wns compelled by nnother solicitor. This is tho farm that lie has boasted of so much to hu friends of what ho has done, and told Mrs Craig, m his own office, he thought he had dono enough for the Craig family. There are more matters I will relpr to, and mention them in connection with Mr Richmond's ofHco. When I was about to sign the large deed referred to, 12th July, 1870, I think about thirty to forty pages it elated it was a bona Jldo sale. I objected to Mgn it, and took it away for about two da vs. I showed it to Mr .1. Buitt He said, " You must not sign it in that form." Mr Burtt went with mo to Mr Richmond's office. I then said, "I will not sign if mi that form." Mr Richmond replied (or words to this eftect), "As tho deed is done sign it; we all know and understand that it is by way of tiust : and when you can pay Mr J. S. Macf.ulane you will get back your propeity. I will give you a letter to this effect, signed by Mr J. S. Macfarlane!" 1 signed the deed, but to this day I have received no such letter. Often has Mr Richmond and Mr Thomas Macfl.ir'ane said I never would h.ac hack the null. lam satisfied that was intended. Let } our iculeis judge. There arc m.my inoi e matters hLo tins, but I will not touch on them at present. All f want fiom Mr J. S, Macf.ulane is— and I hue demanded it twice through tho Supreme Couit--a tine account of the bonks, according to the agci'tnient signed and icuiataied in tUe Supieiuo Court, and I will pay him the balance, if any. THOMAS CRAIG. Julvl.3. 1573.
