Major Jackson, M.11.R., arrived in the district last night by coach. We have great pleasure in welcoming him baek after his arduous and unsatisfactory duties as our representative in the Assembly. It is due to the gallant major thut the settlers should by some means evidence their appreciation of the manner in which he lias by his votes supported the interests of tilis district. It is true that he has not spoken much, but we must remind our readers that tlie most useful men in the House arc often those who never waste the time of the country by making long speeches.
it is in the committee rooms of our representative assemblies that the knowledge and experience of members is utilised, as, in fact, that is where the real work is got through. The talk in the House is only too oft en addressed to the constituents of the speake; s, rather than to the House. Each vote (hat our member nas recorded has been such as we, had we been in liis place, should have registered. The usual fortniyhtly meeting of the Cambridge Mutual' Improvement Association was held at the. School-room, Cambridge, on Thursday evening, tin 21th inst. In the absence of the President, Mi' Allwill was called upon to take the chair. Alter the delivery of a very interesting lecture by the Hev. Mr Stewart, it was proposed by Mr Campbell thai the Association be adjourned sine die. That gentleman explained that his object in moving this resolution was not to depreciate what had been done by the existing society, but he stated that its constitution and. rules were framed in such a way that the society failed to etlect-many beneticial results such-as naturally might be expected from such an institution. He explained to the members that it would be better to form a totally new society the following winter than attempt to carry on the existing one under its present rules. This proposal meeting with the approbation of tlie association, was unanimously carried. It is announced in another column that Dr Carr will revisit the Wakato in about ten days from this date. We understand that it is his intention to practice as a medical man during his sojourn in the district, which will be of some months duration. The- bi-yearly six day's training of the Cambridge Cavalry 'Volunteer Corps will commence on .Friday, the Ist November. The corps now numbers nearly fifty of all ranks, and is regularly increasing in strength, and will soon at the present rapid rate of increase number as many as the sister corps at Te Awamulu. , • ' The resignation of Captain William. Cumming, Waikato Kille Volunteers, is gazetted. .A meeting wdl be held to-night to elect a successor. The following promotions in the Armed Constabulary* Force are gazetted : —Assistant-Surgeon John Carey to be Surgeon. Date of Commission, Ist October, 1872.
