His death is attributed to the effects of drink on deceased's heart and lungs. Mr Redwood's horses arrived sale from kelson for the races. Invercargil. The show of entires to-day was a great, success. Visitors say it was the best turn-out of draught sires to be seen in the colony. At the District Court sittings, Christie received nine months' hard labour for prison-breaking. .Michael Clear, for attempted suicide, discharged on surety, was to come up for sentence when called upon, but did not Had suretiea, and made a fresh attempt to cut his throat this morning in gaol. Greymouth. A grand pyrotechnic and musical display was held last Light in honour of the Vogel-Wuterhouso Ministry. Taranaki. A man named Adler, for an indecent assault on a child, has been sentenced to -1 years' penal servitude. Westport. The Alpine Company, Lyell, struck a big reef today o£ still richer stone than the Little Wonder. It is glittering with heavy gold. The Reefton speculators arc keenly excited in consequence of the iind. They arc rushing in masses. The Little Wonder stone is also improving. The Exelsior prospects are better. All shares are rising very rapidly. Dunedin. The Dunedin terminus of the Port Chambers railway is being pushed on. Engines arc running with material for the permanent way from Tort Chalmers to the South Belt, Dune-din. PARLIAMENTARY NEWS. Wellington, Saturday. Last night, on the motion for going into Committee of Supply, Gillies, at some length, replied to Vogel's criticism on his financial statement when moving his no-confidence motion. Vogel replied to Gillies. In Committee nearly the whole remaining estimates were passed. Government promised on the supplementary estimates to include a vote to recoup Otago for expenses which that Province was put to in leasing Fern Hill as a residence for the Governor when it was believed the session would be held in Dunedin. On the Militia-Volunteer Estimates being discussed. McLean said he saw a way to effect a large reduction. The vote was passed on this understanding. 8 p.m. O'Rorke has accepted a seat in the Ministry. Sunday. The Opposition means to fight on Monday. Various grounds of objection are stated. The Chairmanship of Committee question is made a party vote. The Opposition have selected Bunny. J. E. Brown (Canterbury) and Sheehan are spoken of as candidates. Should the two be put forward, Bunny goes in. The session may be prolonged a few days in consequence.
LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Melbourne, Saturday, October 5. The Education Bill debate is still proceeding in the Assembly, and is likely to be carried by a majority. The Council rejected the Permissive Bill and Labour Bill, and struck out the main principles of the Mining on Private Properties Bill. The attention of the Government had been called to the rejection of these bills, and they acknowledged their responsibility in the matter and promised to submit other measures. Miners are returning from Charters Towers in great numbers. Tenders have been accepted for the construction of 34 miles of railway, from Newstead to Maryborough and from Burrumbeet to Beaufort. The rate for the former is £2,700 per mile, and the latter £2,164: per mile. Alexander and James G-ovan, tallow manufacturers, have beeu committed on a charge of conspiracy to defraud. The Australian Alliance Insurance Company have declared a dividend of 10 per cent., and carried £22,000 to the reserve fund. A number of race horses have arrived from Sydney. De Hago, formerly of Lyster's Opera Company, blew out his brains yesterday. The convict Weechurch, recently respited, attempted suicide by opening a vein in his arm. A Ballarat firm has accepted a tender to construct fifty locomotives, to cost over £50,000. Sales have been effected of over 12,000 bushels of New Zealand wheat up to six and a-half. Oats dull; only moderate business in the import market. Arrived —Albion, on the 30th from Wangaroa. Revenue returns show a net increase of £212,464 on the year. In bank stocks there is a demand for investment. The Alhambi'a leaves for the Bluff on the 12th instant. Sydney. The steamer Queensland encountered heavy seas off Solitaires, and lost the chief officer. The vessel sustained considerable damage. The Rev. Adam Thompson has been appointed Principal of the Presbyterian College. Last quarter's revenue ie the largest yet attained. Major FitzSimmons, of the permanent force, died very suddenly. Rapid progress is making in building new schooners for the South Sea trade. More diamonds have been found at Obern. Brewster's cargo of Californian wheat sold for 5s 9dHeavv weather has been experienced. The K'ero leaves for Auckland early next week. Adelaide.
