To the Editor of The Waikato Times.

Sin, —As your editorial of the sth insfc. so thoroughly enunciates the opinions of the settlers in this- district relative to the views they ent'ertain as to the saicidal policy of the now Government in proposing the re-tu.-n of a portion- of the confiscated lands to the rebel natives, and the withdrawal of the money grants for road making hitherto so judiciously and beneficially allowed by the late government, I oonsider that you merit the thanks of the community at large ; and I am only endorsing the opinion of many others in expressing my thanks for the able manner in which you advocate our interest. It is now that we can prize and appreciate the value of our local newspaper, and I feel that if meetings are now held in each settlement endorsing- the sentiments therein expressed, it will go far to show Mr Stafford on the one hand that his policy, if carried out, can only ev ntually lead us into war with the natives, and Mr Gillies on the other, that his cutting down and borrowing system can only eventuate in utter ruin to the country. Owing to the want of a good road, the Wai pa district, (and which possesses some of the best land in the Waikato), has hitherto been closed against intending settlers. Should Mr G-illies' policy bo persisted in, in the above fine agricultural district, it may be years before a new settler puts a plough in? the ground. As there-is to be a meeting of the eommitteeof the Agricultural Society on Wednesday next, may I urge upon the president to take into consideration , - the desirability of calling a general meeting, so- that we may let Stafford & Co. see that whatever their policy may be, that we consider it inimical to the future peace and prosperity of the Waikato. —Your obdt. servant,. R- S.
