Mr John Williamson will stand' for the Superintendenev on the resignation of Mr. Gillies. It is also said that Mr Mackuy will be a candidate ; he therefor will not join the' Ministry. At the concert of the Choral Society -svliicli -was to kavc taken place last evening, Sphor's " Last Judgment " was the piece delected. The funeral of Eruera Patuone took place on Saturday. He was interred in the Church of England burial ground, situated at the foot of flagstaff hill on the North Shore. It is said by those who are supposed to be well informed on native matters, that the deceased chief was eight years old when Capt. Cook visited New ZealancCand that he went on board with his people. The funeral was attended by a large number of natives, who were arrayed from head to foot with pikh arero, a handsome shrub with a pure white flower. After the service was completed by the Rev Mr Barrows, the natives threw all their pihl a rero into the grave. The age of the old chief was given on the coffin plate as 96 ; if this was his true age. he could not, of course, have seen Captain Cook.. We are glurl to learn that a sub-contract on the Auckland "and Mercer Eailway has been taken by Messrs Kay & Co ; the work to be commenced at the tunnel' and extend to Mercer on the one side, and Maxmgatawhiri creek on the other. Natives from beyond the confiscated boundary, or in other words, King natives will be employed by the contractors. The Hon Dr Pollen and J. C. Firth. Esq., arrived by coach last night. We understand that the object of the visit is to" settle the dispute with regard to the latter gentleman's land. Samuel Charrels, with numerous aliases, was arrested at Ngaruawahia. on Friday night, by detective Doolan. charged with having stolen a doublebarrelled gun and two shirts from a native at Waiuku. He was brought before G-. Ravner, Esq.. J.P., and remanded to Waiuku. thence he proceeded in charge of the detective yerterday morning. In our issue of the 17th inst. an error occurs in the report of the proceedings before the Resident Magistrate at Hamilton. In place of Mary M'Cabe v. Anne Lees, charged w-ith rescuing two cows contrarv to the provisions of the Impounding Act, we should have printed Augustus Yincent v. Anne Lees. The authorities of the Hawell Lunati'e Asylum hav? appointed Dr. Ravner to be its Superintendent. Dr. Ravner comes from Bethlehem Royal Asylum, where lie has been Assistant-Superintendent to Dr. Rhys Williams, "Times." The Dr. alluded to is a brother of Mr Rapier, resident in this disrsict-
