Mark Twain and a friend met at the Sherman Hou<e, Chicago, where G-ough, the temperence advocate was also staving at the time, and concluded to amu'p themselvea by sending a glass of " cocktail" to G-uigh's room. On its arrival there it was of course refused; but the waiter drank it on the wav downstairs, and reporled "all right' : to the delighted humorists. A second and third " cock-tail" were taken up and disposed of in like manner, when Crouch appeared on the scene, and spoiled the joke by exposing the craft of the waiter, whom he had followed and detected in the act of absorbing the last beverage.
