A P.uaiAMKNTAHY return on thia subject, which was moved by Mr Locke, has been issued. It tells us t nut there are in the United Kingdom 2,671 brewers and 99,394 licensed vituallers. lieershops do not ovist, in Scotland or Ireland, but in England there iiro 42,590, while 1<,11>2 licenses have been issued to persons who sell beer that is not consumed on the premises. The number of brewers in the principal towns is as follows: —London, .103 ; Manchester, 101; Portsmouth, 82; Halifax, 78; Liverpool, 77; Ware, 71; Newcastle, 72 ; Southampton, 71 ; Lincoln, 70. The publicans are mainly distributed as follows:-—London, 6,222; Suuderland, 2,252; Liverp>ol, 2,081; Warrington, 1,788; Bolton, 1,780; CarditV, .1,778; Muidslone, 1,695; and Newcastle, 1,693. Of the total number of licensed vituallers throughout England, viz : 70.204 ; beer is brewed by 19,717, but only 14 of these are in the metropolitan district. The brewers of the United Kingdom consumed 40,626,690 bushels of malt in the year comprised in this return ; the vituallers bred 7,550,647 bushels, and the beersellers 3,114,889 bushels. In the year 50,724,086 bushels of malt were made, and the amount of duty charged thereon was £6,878,102 6/111. Of the 31,726 persons who took out common brewers' licenses 25,714 brew less than 1000 barrels per annum. Only one brews over 700,000 barrels, and he paid a license duty amounting to £0,155 5/-'. besides a supplementary charge of £437 10/-. The total amount paid bv all classes of brewers in the year was £399,576 ll?6d. The quantity of beer exported from this country was 467,503 barrels, and its declared value was £1,811,076. We have also received a return, moved tor by Mr. Nicholson, relative to the trade in spirits. This shows that last year 30,855,035 gallons of proof spirits were distilled in England, 13.813,062 in Scotland, and 9,302,253 in Ireland.' 4,340,205 gallons were delivered duty paid from the distillers' stocks, and 26,182,758 gallons were put into bond. Last year duty was paid on 25,114,201 proof gallons of British spirits, nnd the duty at 10/- per gallon, amounted to £12,557,105 18/2. Nearly the whole of these spirits were consumed in the United Kingdom.
