AUCKLAND.
(FROM OUli OWN CORKI.'SI'ONDKNT.) >Sept ember 16. The strains})ip Hero lias once more arrived in harboir, oi'tcr an absence of upwards of three month.-", with a full complement of passengers ami an unusually large cargo. Additional interest was felt in the vessel by our townsfolk in consequence of the injustice and loss in flirt oil upon her owners by the Sydney authorities in placing tlu? vessel in quarantine for the full limit of time permitted by the Act, a proceeding which is felt to have hud its origin more ill a feeling of jealousy than the necessities of the occasion called fjr. As indicative of tho sympathy and esteem in which Captain Logan is held here a complimentary banquet is to be given to him next week by our leading citizens. The alfair promises to bo a great success. By the Phtubc, from Wellington, wo have in our m'dst Mr Anthony Trollopo, a gent leman whose name must b.' familiar to every one. His arrival has not .been marked by any kind of demonstration beyond the Mayor's having Availed upon him, otl'oring his c nigral illations, and presenting a letter from the secretary of t' e Mechanics' Institute, with a request that lie (Mr Trollope) would allow his name to be enrolled among the honorary members of the Institute. An assent was given. Mr Trollopo leaves to-day for the Lake country. Advantage should undoubtedly be taken on liis return to Auckland to pay a marked compliment to so distinguished a writer bv ente taining him at. a public dinner. Some surprise was created on Friday evening by the report that Mr A. W. Fleming had been arrested 011 a charge of embezzling moneys belonging to tho Mutual Life Assurance Company, of which he was t:e agrn', An inqu : ry took place at the Police Court on Saturday last. The Crown Prosecutor asked for n remand until Tuesday next, which was granted. B ;il was acceptcd. Mr Fleming has been studying for the Church. Elforts are being made by his friends to raise by subscription the a nount, of his defalcation with a view doubtless to arre-it. further proceedings. Another literary effort nnd -r the title of b. • Bat/ of Plenty Times has just be.mi launched, ( lie first three numbers of which are to hand. Although it will not compare favourably with the Wdikn/o Times in size and appearance, apparently lacking t.liat amount of local support which is accorded lo your journal, it yet presents a very fair appearance," and will, without doubt, prove of great advantage lo the d strict it represents, in making its wants known and obtaining a recognition of them at the hand-s of the Government. The election of three City Councillors took placeon Friday last. More interest in the result, was manifested on this occasion than has been exhibited on any previous one. There was ac! oicj from eight candidates, four of whom were ex-Councillors, three unknown to fame, while the irrepressible Hurst madeup the number. The result of the election was in* favour of Messrs Hu vst, Dargaville, and Jlold-<liip. The People's Champion (Staines) was nowhere, which is accounted for by him as owing to there having been, some " tiddle-winking" with the ballot papers. Tho rejection by the ratepayers of Maeready and Bugden (the retiring Concillors) is an indication that citizen* are becoming alive to the wciglit of taxation imposed upon tlicm, and a growing feeling that it, is due in a measure to pa-t nial-adniinistration. One thin j is certain that there must be something very roll en when upwards of £10,000 arrears of rates are owing. Mining matters are quiet. Caledonian shares areselling at £36 ; Cures 538/. A dividend is cxpeeted to be doclared in, the former mine next Wednesday.
