INOCULATION OF CATTLE.

Tile following report on the inoculation of cattle as a preventive of pleuro-pneuraonia is furnished by James B. Simouds, M.D., of the Royal Veterinary College, London. ''The inoculation of cattle as a preventive of pluro-pneumonia is in reality a misnomer, as the introduction of the virus fluid from a diseased lung , , the material which is selected for inoculatioa does not produce pluro-pneu-monia or any modified form thereof, as is invariably the case when a specific virus or inoculable material is used. The system which is altogether empiric is, however, greatly extolled by many persons, and as strongly condemned by others. The opponents of the system, far outnumber its advocates, especially in the scientific world, in consequence of the serious results which frequently attend its practice, such as mortification of the part operated upon, and the consequent not unfrequent death of the animal. The presumed security which- the inoculation affords is far more ideal than real, as both on a large scale, as on a small one, it often completely fails in arresting the progress of the disease. Long experience, both on the Continent and in: England, has fully established its inutility in hundreds of instances. The accounts which reach us from Australia, Kew Zealand, and- other distant colonies, are very conflicting indeed ; equally so with those which come from different parts of our country, and in scarcely any case will the supposed benefit bear a close investigation.
