On May 1,"),, the good old ship-Amphitrite, of | North Shields, recently stranded south of th'i\-| South Shields Pier, and—next to the Brotherly Love, of South Shields—the oldest merchant ship afloat, was offered for sale by auction. The ancient associations, connected with, the vessel brought together a very numerous company.. Mr. Bushell commenced the bidding at 200/, .an.l after a sharp competition with Mr. Irvine, of Xortli Shields, Mr. : James Young, J. P., owner of the Brotherly Love, ; was deehued purchaser at .'>4o/. After the sale, Mr. ' Glover proposed the health of Mr. James. Young, ; the purchaser of the Amphitrite, and in doing so, j referred to the fact that Mr. Young was now the j possessor of tlie two oldest merchant sailing ships j afloat.—Mr. James Young, in responding, said that i in bidding for the Amphitrite he was actuated by a i desire to have a companion in old age to the Bro- : therly Love. Since, the Amphitrite was stranded, ; and attentii it had been drawn to the two vessels, he ; had had sev eral enquiries lespecting them from gentlemen in. London, Devon, and other places, One gentleman, Captain A. J. Grosnie, of Devon, had written to him. asking as a favour.a.piece of the ; timbers of the old Brotherly Love, to keep as an interesting, momento of Captain, Coekls- old vessel. : He forwarded a present as requested, and he was gratified on Tuesday morning, to receive a parcel by post containing a foot rule mounted with silver, and ' the inches marked with silver pins. Another letter he had received was from an old Australian colonist, who, having spent twenty,fa"ve years in Port Jackson, discovered by Captain Cook, was desirous to asccrtaiu if he (Mr. Y~oung>-tvould self the Brotherly Love, to.be sent to Poit Jackson as a companion to the monument lately erected to the celebrated voy- '• ager. The Brotherly Love is about I£?-years 01 ! age, and the Amphitrite is 97 years old. .
