'• We wore very pie sjil on tho arrival of the Waipa, .steamer, at Ngaruawahia yesterday afternoon, to nee fourteen now arrivals from tiie old country oil hoard. There arts two families, eacli with a father and mother at its head to watch, over the | conduct and interests of their children; the families consist respectively of live young girls and four boys and a giil. The district is indebted to Mr. Keynolds, of r*ukoriniu. for Una addition to our population. They are just the class of settlcn we require ; they arc all natives of .Somersetshire, and accustomed to a country life. Wo conversed with the mother of the family, and learned that any number of. similar emigrants would be only too glad to emigrate to this country if they could but manage to scrape together the passage money. We have before pointed out the absurdity of tiie Immigration Agent slating that mutable English immigrants could not be procured, Let h'uu or some oilier desirable person make a trij into die country from which these people have come We cordially welcome the new arrivals to tin Waikato. The Waikato Rille Volunteers, under the command of Captain dimming, assembled at Hamiltoi on .Saturday for their usual monthly inspection. The members presented a. very soldierly appearance and went through several exercises in a very exaci maimer, shewing the attention they have paid to th; drill-instruction of bergeant Taylor, A.U.K Tin band, under Bandmaster Shannagban, also appearec on parade for the iirafc time, and discoursed " Yankee Doodlei - ' and " Kinnigan's Wake "in good time and key, for which they were heartily applauded bj a number of residents who came to hear them, It is only seven weeks since Mr. Shannaghan took tht boy-j in hand who, we may say, had never seen ;i life or drum before, and Saturday's performance shews the pains that have been taken by the bandmaster, as web as the attention paid by the boys to their instruction. After parade, a meeting was held (Ensign McDonald in..the chair), and the financial report laid before the members ; the report shewed that there was a balance against the corps of SI lis Od; to meet which, there were subscriptions due amounting to 10/ J 4s— lc was adopted new. con, After several other matters relating to the well-beint of the corps had been discussed, the meetim separated with a vote ot thanks to the chairmau. Wo are very glad to be oble to inform our readers that the brick-making business is about to be com menced in the Waikato. Mr. Kalph, of Kauuipokeka, hns already got a puddling-mill in working order, in addition ashed Jr> feet by 16 has been erected, and another will be huished in tho course of a fortnight. Captain Kenny, on behalf of the Government, ha* lent the puddiiug:mili which was used for inakini the bricks of which the redoubt at Xgaruawahi; was constructed, so that two mills will shortly be at work. The clay is of the best description, in fact sc good that those conversant with the business saj that it is a pity to use it for brick-making. _ It is intended to manufacture tiles for the flooring o: kiichens and verandahs, also drain-pipes for iarmin< purposes. The proprietor anticipates having a kill of bricks ready in about a monhh from this dale and
j 10,000 before' the end of November. The bricks ! will be supplied, ab ."Jl per 1000 less cost than lias ever yet been the case m the Waikato. We wish the enterpsi'e the success it deserves. If sufficient support is Mr. Ralph intends to import a brick-making machine, in 'which case he will be able to supply larger quantities at a lower race. We undersi and that the clay is well iitted for pottery purposes* We trust that some of our capitalists will take the hint. We are sorry to learn that although the rope for ; the Ferry at Hamilton A'-ived Ihsc Tuesday, no steps | have, as yet, been takeu to put it in its place. We j have before called a Mention to the fact that the old rope is in a most unsound state aud liable to part at ; any moment*. We ie.-im that the Board are-desirous ! of employing the sreamer to carry the rope. What j is to prevent their carrying the rope across on the punt we are unable to understand. If it cannot at present be suspende 1 over the river, as eventually intended, it should be submerged, in order that the traffic may uot run the risk of being entirely stopped. We trust that we shall not again be called upon to notice this subject till we are enabled to intimate that the new line is in position. An nuiuesst was held yesterday at the All Nations"i Hotel. Graham.";town, by the Uoroner, Dr. JJilgour, j upon the body of John Law lor, who was killed on j Wednesday afternoon in; the Caledonian mine. The i evidence of his mates, of Gapcain ilichards, the ■ mana-er, and of Mr. Goldsmith, miuing inspector, j was taken, aud-manifested clearly enough that the j sad occurrence was not caused, by any. neglect, on j the part of the manager or workmen. A. verdict, of. j accidental death was returned. The deceased: came j of a family of miners who found employment iitthe '■
Knoekmahon copper nine, the property of the Irish Mining Company, tie was not, however, a miner by profession, having run away from home "at an early age, and taken to a sc-a life. His family lost sight of him for years, and only within the last few months was-the intercourse renewed, through the agency of C-vptain Bielumb, who was at one time manager of the KiiocJrmahon mine. Lawlor was an Odd leilovv, and a number of the Loyal Waikato Lodge. —Crots, August 2.
