From the Dally Southern Cross. Graharastown, Wednesday, 8 p.m. A furious easterly gale has prevailed today, with heavy rain. The ' Golden Crown' arrived safely, and has been detained until 110011 to-morrow, when she will leave, weather permitting 1 . The inquest on the bodies of Mrs Hyam and children has been adjourned until tomorrow. Coromandel, Wednesday, 5.25 p.m. The stormy weather- for the last few days has culminated in heavy floods. The upper portion of the Tokatea- tramway has been washed away. Mining- is altogether at a standstill. There is considerable damage and loss in the district. Wellington, Wednesday. The ' Nabraska' has arrived, and has been placed in quarantine. At present the ultimate intention of" the Board with respect to her is unknown. The Board is still sitting. The s.s 'Taranaki,' from the Mamikau,. Taranaki, and Nelson, has arrived. Ly ttelton, Wednesday. The Colonial Government steamer ' Luna' arrived outside under canvas. When 100" miles from port she broke down, the air-pump rod giving way, and other injuries have been sustained. As the wind was unfavorable, the s.s. ' Halcyon' went down and towed her upto an anchorage. The repairs will occupy some days; The s.s. ' Rangatira,' from, Ly ttelton, has arrived; she-sails to-morrow. Grey mouth, Wednesday* Four men have been buried in. a claim at Duffer Creek, near its junction, with Halfounce. Great effort.? are being made to extricate them. Their names are «upposed to- be Hugh Towers, Edward Murphy, Edward Finn, and Peter McMahon. To-day two men were got out alive. Their names are unknown. Dunedin, Wednesday. A diver went dbwn to examine the 4 Tararua,' and found the lower pintal had broken into the socket of the keel. It is expected that it will be possible to repair the breakage by welding apiece on to the rudder whilst the vessel is afloat. If it is found impossible to do this, she will be docked.
The lute residence of Mr Baraford. at ning'ton, took fire this morning, and was totally destroyed. It was not occupied: Tho building was irisurod in, the London, Liverpool, and Globe Insurance Company for X4S(X It was valued at £600. Napier, Thursday. A great meeting of the East Coast tribes is beingheld at Matahuna, Ropata'a pa, near tho East Cape. There-are about 3tM) natives present. The object of the* meeting, is to» celebrate the final,establishment of peace. on> the East Coast, and to hoist, for the first time, Ropata's standard, presented to him by the Government, ami called the " Power of Ngatiporos." Wellington, Thursday. Contracts liave beeiv entered into with Mr Brogden, by the Government, for the construction of the Napier and Tort of Napier railway. The length of the line is two miles ten chains, and the contract price 13,732/.. The ' Nebraska' is still detained m quarantine. l.hmcdin, Thursday. The Permissive Bill is being largely signed in tho country districts. - W estport. Mr Manning-is-not here. There is no report circulating in Westport that ho has been killed whilst wrestling.
